48 Hours in New Orleans

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, my in-laws came to visit last week so we took a quick road trip to New Orleans. We stayed in an Airbnb north of Magazine Street, which was a great location. Since Rob and I spent most of our previous New Orleans trip in the French Quarter it was nice to explore less “touristy” parts of town. We were only there for about 48 hours, but were able to fit in a lot of fun places! Below is a recap of our trip and you can see more of my favorite places to eat and drink in New Orleans in this post!

Day 1: We arrived around 4pm—perfect timing for happy hour! We went to Cavan which had some food and drink specials, plus a really cute atmosphere. I mean pink booths and chairs?! Yes, please. It complemented my glass of rosé perfectly ;) We also ordered a fancy king cake thing (pictured above). I can’t find the description online and I forget exactly what it’s made of, but it was delicious! All I remember is that it had crab butter, which intrigued me and apparently was quite tasty.

After happy hour we walked over to Dat Dog for dinner. The endless combinations of sausage and toppings overwhelmed me, but I went with the Crawfish Étouffée Dog since that seemed very “New Orleans.” It was good, but surprisingly I liked Rob’s alligator sausage much better! I think it’s because it had a sweet sauce, which balanced out the spiciness. We enjoyed sitting on the patio under the Edison-style string lights and they were just about to start up trivia when we left.

Last, but not least: the breweries! It wouldn’t be a Kamber vacation without trying local microbrews! We went to Nola Brewing Co., which had a great selection of beers. I especially loved their sours! Then we walked over to Port Orleans Brewing Company and shared another flight. The beers were good, but they didn’t have as wide of a selection.

Day 2: We only had one full day in New Orleans, so first we walked around Magazine Street again. Most of the shops had been closed when we were there the night before and I liked seeing it in the daylight. The storefronts are really cute and there was a great selection of boutiques. I bought a cute straw bag from Armoire that I can’t wait to style for you guys on the blog! When it came to food we had to try Sucré since both my mother-in-law and I love sweets. We shared a delicious chocolate cake creation. I was also tempted to try all of the macarons, chocolate truffles and gelato. For lunch we ate at The Rum House, which served Caribbean and Latin American fare. The tacos we ordered were pretty good, but my favorite item was their house salad! The mixed greens were topped with roasted sweet potato, toasted pecans, beets, goat cheese and a curry vinaigrette. It was so flavorful and included all of my favorite salad toppings! I want to try making my own version at home sometime.

And as if we hadn’t had enough to eat, we then went to The Creole Creamery! Their ice cream was SO good and the flavors were really unique! I ordered a scoop of chocolate amaretto cheesecake and a scoop of the petit fours (delicious almond flavor!). To burn some of these calories we walked around the French Quarter, specifically Jackson Square, The French Market and Frenchmen Street. Of course we saved some room for beignets at Café Du Monde!

For dinner we went to Pascal Manale’s, which is a delicious Italian restaurant that’s known for their barbeque shrimp. Rob had those and I ordered their sautéed crabmeat and scallops served with a cream sauce over pasta (amazing!). It sounds like all we did was eat, but I promise we did a lot of walking and saw the typical sites!

Day 3: On our way home we stopped at The Shed just outside of Biloxi, Mississippi. It is seriously the best BBQ I’ve ever had! The ribs are sooo good and their sides are equally as tasty, especially the potato salad and sweet potato casserole! We also stopped at Joe Patti’s Seafood Market in Pensacola to show my in-laws all of the fresh fish. Our last stop was picking up Emmy at the vet! It was a fun getaway, but I was happy to get home to our pup!
