Tips For Wearing Black on Black

Welcome back! Hope you all had a great weekend. Sounds like it was very cold and snowy for a lot of you! It was chilly here in Vegas, but I didn’t see any snow in the valley (although there were rumors of a few flurries). On Saturday we drove up to Mt. Charleston, though, to have lunch at the lodge with some friends. Even though it’s only 30 minutes away from home, the change in scenery is drastic! There were a lot of people sledding, but I was happy sitting indoors with a Kahlúa and Amaretto spiked coffee. It was really fun to catch up with our friends and enjoy the cozy environment. Plus it gave me an excuse to wear my Hunter boots and this parka again! Both items are definitely worth the investment, which I talked about in last week’s post. While we were in Seattle over the holidays I topped this all-black look with the grey jacket (so technically this outfit isn’t 100% black on black in all of the photos, but it was REALLY cold and the only coat I packed!). It’s easy to border on boring when you are wearing one color from head to toe, so always keep in mind the silhouette, details and a complementary mix of textures.

When you wear black on black, it’s all about the details. The lace sleeves and peplum style of this blouse make it anything but basic. I have a very girly sense of style so it immediately caught my eye at LOFT! And it was a no-brainer because it was 40% off (smart shopper tip: if you see something you like there, wait for a sale because they have discounts all the time). For a nice dinner with my family in Seattle I paired the feminine top with black skinny jeans and over the knee boots. The tighter pants/shoes create a streamlined look to balance out the flowy blouse. Proportions are important when wearing only one color. Also, the mix of textures adds even more interest to the monochromatic look. I like combining complementary fabrics, such as sleek leather, soft suede and silky chiffon. The unexpected combination can be really chic. Last but not least: accessories! I topped off this outfit with a sparkly statement necklace. Since you don’t have competing colors or patterns, the accessories really pop!
