I’ve had a few people ask if I go shopping a lot for the different outfits I post on my blog, but I actually don’t buy new pieces very often. I always like when I get compliments on something I’ve had for years—it means I made a timeless purchase! When it comes to building your wardrobe, the key is to buy versatile, classic pieces that can be worn over and over again.
Look for pieces that won’t go out of style. As fun as it is to try bold trends, buying stylish pieces that aren’t too “out there” will allow you to get more use out of them.
Invest in quality basics. There are some things worth splurging on. Perfectly fitting skinny jeans and tall, cognac boots are two items that I will spend more money on since I wear them so often. I also suggest investing in a white V-neck T-shirt, nude pumps, a fitted black dress and a tailored blazer.
Think of the occasion. If you wear business clothes during most of the week, focus on dressy pieces rather than casual clothing when you’re shopping. What good is a cute collection of boyfriend jeans if you can never wear them? I gravitate towards pieces that I can dress up for work and dress down on the weekends so that I can get a lot of use out of them.
Accessorize. An easy (and relatively inexpensive) way to update your older items is with fun accessories. Spice up your go-to tee with a bold statement necklace or layer a cozy new scarf over your favorite sweater. Small details can instantly change the look.
Get rid of the clutter. Don’t let your favorite pieces drown in unwanted clothes. I would rather have an emptier closet full of things I want to wear every day rather than a closet stuffed with things I don’t really like anymore. Check out these tips for a closet cleanse to help you get started.
Start now! A complete wardrobe won’t build itself overnight, so be patient and keep your eyes open for pieces you can’t live without. Also, look out for seasonal sales because these are great times to stock up on stylish staples.
I found this post because it was shared through The Blog Societies and I’m so glad I did because I love your blog. Following along now!

I couldn’t agree more with this post. I have about 10 items in my closet that I splurged on but were seriously the best buys ever; they work with everything else in my wardrobe and help me when I have nothing else to wear! The best buy was a u-neck white T by Alexander Wang t-shirt. I wear it at least once a week for the past 2 years, it’s machine washable and so soft. yeah, it was $90 which is insane but better than buying 5 $20 tees!
great post!

So glad to enjoyed the post, Stefani! Good point about the T-shirt. Definitely worth the $90 if it lasts and it sounds like you have gotten your money’s worth :) I’ll have to look at Alexander Wang T-shirts! Thanks!
Investing in basics is a really important tip! Sometimes, we focus on buying a timeless dress or coat, and we forget to purchase quality everyday attire. Happy Friday :)

I definitely agree with you! A quality white t-shirt isn’t usually top of mind when I’m shopping, but still an important staple. Have a great weekend!
You don’t know how much I need these tips. I’ve been guilty of hoarding any items I see that I like. I really should focus more on investing in classic staples. But trends are so hard to resist. Ugh

I’m so glad I could help! And I don’t think you need to completely stay away from trendy items, but just be selective to make sure you’ll get a lot of use out of them. Plus, if you have a solid collections of basics, you’ll always have something to pair a statement-making piece with :)
