I love scouring thrift stores looking for hidden gems, trying to imagine what each item could become. With a little TLC and creativity, these already-loved items can be transformed to fit your style and needs. As Macklemore says, one man’s trash is another man’s come-up. Now let’s pop some tags! It’s okay if you only have $20 in your pocket.
I was excited to learn about Dinosaurs and Roses, a non-profit thrift store in Las Vegas, that is full of treasures waiting to be discovered. Plus, there’s no need to feel guilty about dropping some dough on the great goodies because profits support numerous charities in the community! On November 7 they are hosting a pop-up shop in Downtown Las Vegas where the homeless will be able to “shop” the donated clothes to receive basic necessities in their size and choice for freeβjust in time for winter. There are a variety of ways to be a part of this event, from clothing and monetary donations to simply shopping the store or volunteering your time at The Street Store. So let’s get crafty and help the community!
While checking out the kitchen items, this cake stand caught my eye. It was in great condition, but the red wouldn’t have been my color of choice. To spruce it up, all I used was some gold spray paint and taupe ribbon.
Start by removing the ribbon, then wash and dry the cake stand.
Place the cake stand upside down on a piece of newspaper, then fold and tape the newspaper over the edge to protect it from the spray paint. Use a gold leaf spray paint to evenly cover the base. For best results, spray from about 10-12 inches away to avoid paint drips. Once it’s dry, remove the paper and then thread the ribbon through the holes. Tie a little bow and you’re good to go!
In the spirit of repurposing, a cake stand doesn’t need to just be used for displaying the sweet treat. I decided to top it with a few of my favorite candles, including the cute mercury glass votive that my sister gave me for my birthday!
