Are you guys as mesmerized by cake decorating videos as I am? Those speedy Facebook videos make it look so easy and inspire me to get creative with my cakes. One style that I’ve been wanting to try out is the sprinkle cake. Nothing says birthday party like a cake covered in rainbow jimmies! You can personalize it by adding candles or cake toppers. The numbers I used for the “30” on this cake were actually table numbers from our wedding, but they poke into the cake perfectly! Although I’m not 30 yet, I thought this number was appropriate for this post since it’s the next milestone birthday for me and my friends. I’ve seen a couple methods for making a sprinkle cake, but here is what I found to be easiest:
- Start by baking your favorite cake. I just used a boxed mix and distributed it evenly between five 6″ round pans. Once they are baked and cool, create flat cake layers by cutting off the top dome with a large, serrated knife. Discard or eat the scraps like I did ;)
- Frost with your favorite buttercream. I used an almond buttercream recipe and transferred it into a large piping back with a round tip. Spiral onto a layer of cake then smooth with an icing knife. Repeat until you’ve used all of the cake layers. Use any remaining buttercream to fill in the empty holes on the side of the cake, then smooth the sides with a large icing knife or bench scraper.
- Time to sprinkle the sides! Place the cake on a wire rack above a cooking sheet (this will catch the sprinkles that don’t stick so that you can reuse them). Grab a handful of rainbow sprinkles and run your hands up the side of the cake, letting the sprinkles fall through your fingers. Continue until sides are completely covered. Gently pat addition sprinkles into any blank spaces. I left the cake top plain, but you could go all out and continue sprinkling on top.
- Add a cake topper. Number candles are cake toppers are perfect for a birthday (the ones I used are from Paper Source). These cake toppers from BHLDN are great for a wedding or bridal shower.
- Enjoy!
