DIY Tassel Garland

Growing up, most kids have Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, but my sister and I also had the Birthday Fairy. Every year I would wake up to a room decorated with balloons, crepe paper and happy birthday banners. It was always a magical start to my birthday and a tradition my mom carried on even while I was in college, decorating my childhood room when I would come home to celebrate. Since the birthday fairy won’t be flying to Nevada this year, I decided it was a good excuse to finally try making a tassel garland. Not only is it festive for birthdays and weddings, it’s also great for every day home decor. 

All you need is tissue paper in your favorite colors, a hot glue gun, scissors and twine. I picked light pink, ivory and gold because those are my wedding colors and I want to hang it at our dessert table.

{1} Take one piece of tissue paper and fold it in half lengthwise with the fold at the top.

{2} Cut little strips of fringe across the entire piece, leaving about 2 inches of uncut tissue paper at the top.

{3} This one piece will make four to five tassels, so cut the fringed tissue paper into equal sections.

{4} Unfold one section and roll the middle part, making sure to not tangle the fringe.

{5} Take the rolled center portion and twist until you reach the fringe. Fold it in half to create a loop at the top, as pictured below.

{6} At the point where the twisted tissue paper overlaps, place a small amount of hot glue and hold together for a few seconds while it cools.

{7} String the tassels onto the twine and hang to decorate.
