How To Decorate a Watercolor Cake

I made this watercolor cake SO long ago, but never got around to publishing this post because seasonal ideas came up, like Easter and St. Patrick’s Day. However I am OBSESSED with how it turned out! Cakes are one of my favorite things to bake, but also the most challenging. There is so much room for creativity, which I love! From flavor combinations to decorating techniques, there are endless possibilities. The frustrating part is when they don’t turn out liked I’d hoped. I’m still a cake decorating amateur, but it’s a baking skill I really want to work on. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to make cakes as pretty as Chelsweets, Molly Yeh, and Michelle from Hummingbird High.

This was the first time I really experimented with frosting. I had some yellow and pink buttercream left over from a sugar cookie recipe, so I decided to give the watercolor cake a try. First I made a simple vanilla cake (I used this recipe, which turned out really well!). Then I made a simple buttercream without any food coloring. I used that for the crumb coat and a lighter layer, then I added splotches of yellow and pink buttercream. Using a metal bench scraper, smooth down the sides. It might take a few times to get it perfectly smooth and if an area needs more color you can always add a little bit more and continue smoothing. It’s so satisfying watching it transform into this gorgeous marbled, watercolor look!

And since I still had pink and yellow frosting left, I decided to put them both in the piping bag to get these two-tone star things. Clearly I’m a very technical baker ;) basically you fit the piping bag with the desired tip, then put the pink on one side and the yellow on the other. Then when you squeeze you get these nice dual colored beauties. Overall this cake was pretty easy to decorate (way easier than it looks!). I challenge you to give it a try next time you’re baking at share in with #JamieKamberTreats on Instagram! I’ll share some on my Instagram stories :) happy baking!
