Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving weekend! Rob and I went to a couple Friendsgivings and I ate my weight in sweet potato casserole (I make this Ruth’s Chris recipe every year). Although being in the military sometimes makes it hard to go home for the holidays, I’m so glad that we have great friends who invite us to spend time with theirs. It turned out to be a very festive holiday, even though we just stayed in Las Vegas. At least it was somewhat cold so that I could wear an oversized sweater to these meals! I’m all about comfort when you’re going to be relaxing at someone’s house and eating up a storm. I basically live in oversized sweaters this time of year because they are so cozy and can create a really chic look. This trend can be tricky, though, because it’s easy to look like you’re drowning in the sweater if you don’t style it correctly. For me it’s all about balance and neutral colors! These are 5 of my tips for styling an oversized sweater:
- Keep the bottom half sleek and simple. I like to pair my boxy sweaters with skinny jeans and pointed-toe flats or booties to create a nice balance, otherwise you might get lost in this look. Leggings would also be really flattering—just make sure your sweater is long enough, since leggings are NOT pants. One of my biggest pet peeves.
- If the sweater has a v-neck or an off-the-shoulder style, layer it over a lace bralette so that a little bit of the lace comes through. I like the slouchy sweaters that show a little bit of skin, and having some lace popping out adds a fun mix of textures. This halter style is great for wearing underneath a sweater!
- Stick to a neutral color. Grey, black, tan and olive are great colors to work with. A really bright color or busy pattern can be too overwhelming when there’s so much fabric. Plus neutrals can easily mix and match, so you’ll get more use out of a versatile color.
- Don’t be afraid to go up a size. Sweaters that are meant to be oversized are usually sized accordingly, like the turtleneck I’m wearing—it’s a small and it still has that large, casual fit. However, you can get the oversized effect by going up a size or two in a normal sweater. Heck, you could even check out the men’s section!
- Have fun with layers. Try layering a button-up blouse or chambray shirt underneath. I especially like wearing a plaid top because it adds a pop of pattern. If you live in a really cold climate, you could also wear a classic coat or stylish parka on top. Or top it off with a scarf to make it even cozier!
