Anyone else like to kick off their weekend at Trader Joe’s? I love picking up a fresh bouquet of flowers, an easy dinner and a $4.99 bottle of wine on my way home from work on Fridays. When I was there last weekend I saw that they had bags of blood oranges for only $2.99 each, so I figured why not give them a try. I’ve never baked with them before, but it sounded like a fun challenge—especially since they are so pretty! I wanted to take advantage of the pretty pink color they create, so I decided to use it as a glaze for my favorite almond poppy seed bread (this is the original post with the recipe, just excuse the old photos haha). I love the citrus flavor that the blood oranges add. Plus the texture of the sugary crust complements the soft, fluffy bread perfectly. To make it even prettier, I paced some thin blood orange slices on top. Overall it’s a really easy recipe and my husband said it was a hit at his office! I usually pawn the food I bake off to him or my coworkers so I don’t need to spend the entire day at the gym ;)

- Preheat oven to 350F. Grease and flour two 8" x 4" loaf pans, set aside.
- In a medium bowl whisk together flour, salt and baking powder. In a large bowl mix eggs, canola oil, sugar and milk. Gradually add in the dry ingredients. Stir in poppy seeds, almond extract, vanilla extract and melted butter. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 50 minutes. Cover with foil if the top starts to get too brown. Remove from oven and let cool in pan until it's set enough to remove and transfer to wire rack.
- Once the bread has cooled, mix together the powdered sugar and blood orange juice in a small bowl. Then drizzle on top of the bread. Garnish with thin blood orange slices.

When I began making this recipe I noticed it didn’t mention how many eggs are to be used in the recipe. However, the instructions said to use eggs.
Can you please tell me how many eggs to use? Thank you!

Not only is this just beautiful to look at (and that pink color!), it also sounds like such a delicious recipe! I’m not really a huge baker, but this really tempts me to give it a go.

Ooh, this looks so amazing! I just made a vegan version with cashewmilk, vegan butter extract, and applesauce to replace the oil. It’s cooling right now but it looks amazing. Your recipes are always so pretty- that blood orange glaze is awesome.
