As a Destin photographer, I’m often asked by clients what they should wear for their beach sessions. This is an important thing to consider as you plan your upcoming shoot because it really determines the vibe and aesthetic of your images (in addition to the background and photographer’s editing style, of course). Do you want to wear bright colors that pop against the white sand? Or go with the beach motif and wear coastal colors? Or how about showing some personality with unique patterns? Here is my guide for what to wear for family beach photos in Destin and on 30A.

Coastal Color Palette
Many people opt for colors that are inspired by the sugar-white sand and gorgeous blue water of the Gulf of Mexico. Varying shades of blue, white and tans can achieve this beach-inspired look. As any Destin photographer will tell you, this is one of the most popular color combos.

Bright Colors & Jewel Tones
Bright, saturated colors really pop against the white sand. Try wearing hues such as sapphire blue, emerald green, and shades of pink or coral.

Mix In Some Prints
Rather than everyone wearing solid color clothing, have a couple people in your family wear prints. Whether it’s plaid, stripes or floral, just make sure the colors complement the rest of your group’s attire. I love how the floral prints in the image below tie in with the light blues and tans worn by the other family members.

All White
Overwhelmed by coordinating colors? Make it easy and go with all white. Think flowy dresses, button-up shirts, linen pants and other breezy, beachy pieces.

Keep It Classic
Don’t wear anything too trendy because you’ll look back and think “What was I wearing?!” I want you to cherish these photos from your Destin, Florida vacation for years to come!

Show Some Personality
Don’t be afraid to have fun with fashion! Classic styles aren’t for everyone, so don’t force it! If your family prefers unique, funky styles, stay true to yourselves! I love that this family showed up in colorful prints and Hawaiian shirts. It really helped me capture their fun personalities on camera!

Matching Outfits for the Kids
I’m a big proponent for not looking too “matchy matchy,” but sometimes matching outfits for kids can be really cute. I love how these sisters have the same adorable dress on! And as you can see, the brothers have the same shirt on, but different shorts, so it doesn’t look “too perfect.”

Wear Something You Feel Confident In
Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel your best! If you’re uncomfortable or worried about how you look in something, it’ll show in pictures. It might sound cheesy, but a confident smile truly is the best accessory!
