This summer has been all about showing some shoulder! Whether it’s a ruffled off-the-shoulder dress or a chic cold-shoulder top, this trend has been spotted on almost all of my favorite bloggers and it shows no signs of slowing down. Some of these pieces should be strictly worn in the summer (think palm prints and bright colors), but there are multiple ways to transition this trend into fall.
How to wear cold shoulder styles in the fall:
- Stick with dark and neutral colors. Burgundy, olive green, ivory and black are my go-to hues this time of year. There are also pretty autumn-colored patterns that would be fun to try!
- Create Balance. Since these pieces show some skin on top, I like to pair them with more conservative bottoms like a midi skirt or jeans with booties. In addition to balancing the amount of skin you show, it’s important to keep proportions in mind. If the top has a lot of volume (like ruffle sleeves or a smocked neckline) pair it with sleek skinny jeans.
- Try a long-sleeved style. I’ve seen several long-sleeved styles ranging from loose, billowy blouses to simple, form-fitting tops.
- Can it be layered? As pretty as these feminine style are, sometimes they need to be worn under a coat when the temperatures start to drop. A utility jacket would look really cute over a top with crochet details or a minimalist-style black dress. Just make sure the sleeves and neckline will fit! There’s no way some of those voluminous sleeves will fit under a coat! I’m all about comfort and HATE being cold, so I keep this in mind while shopping.
